about the lexicon

About Dream Lexicon — an honest encyclopedia of the night

Most dream dictionaries tell you a snake means an enemy and leave it there. We wanted the other kind of book — the one that says what the research suggests, what the traditions add, and what's worth writing down at breakfast. So we wrote it.

What this is

Dream Lexicon is a dream dictionary that treats you like an adult. Every entry answers the question you actually woke up with — what does this tend to mean — in the first three sentences. Under that answer sit the layers: the psychology, with real citations where research exists and a plain flag where it doesn’t. The folklore, from more than one tradition, reported with affection and labeled as folklore. The variations — chased but not caught, teeth loose but not falling — because the variation usually carries the meaning.

Every entry ends the same way: with the morning after. A question to ask yourself. A line to write down. A dream you don’t do anything with is just weather.

How we read dreams

We hold two ideas at once. The first: dreams aren’t messages from anywhere but you. The night mind rehearses threats, replays the day, and files memory — that’s the science, and we keep to it. The second: the symbols still matter, because what your mind chooses to rehearse is information. A century of clinical practice — Jung most usefully — treats the dream as an honest letter from the part of you that doesn’t perform. We read it that way.

What we don’t do: prophecy, alarm, or medical advice. When a dream pattern touches something worth raising with a doctor — sleep paralysis that frightens you nightly, nightmares after something that happened to you — the entry says so, once, plainly.

The interpreter

The dream interpreter is the lexicon with a listening ear. Describe the dream in your own words; it returns the likely reading, the symbols it found, and links into the full entries. It follows the same rules the writers do — psychology first, folklore labeled, no fortune-telling — and it stores nothing.

The waking practice

A recurring dream shows what your attention returns to at night. Some of us pair the dream journal with the AYA Method — a short daily audio of your own future self, which is the same rehearsal, chosen on purpose, in daylight. The pairing isn’t required to use the lexicon. It’s just what several of us found on the far side of writing our dreams down for long enough.

Pertanyaan umum

Who writes Dream Lexicon?
A small group with unusual overlap — a former sleep-lab researcher, a folklorist, a depth-psychology counselor, a lucid dreamer of twenty years, a science writer, a poet, and a former night-shift nurse. Different rooms of the same house. Every entry carries a byline, and every byline is someone who takes dreams seriously without taking leave of their senses.
How are the entries written?
Every entry follows the same order: the most likely meaning first, in plain words. Then the psychological reading — what clinical tradition and research suggest, with sources where they exist. Then the cultural and spiritual readings, labeled as folklore. Then the variations of the dream, and finally what to do the morning after.
Do you believe dreams predict the future?
No — there's no good evidence for prophecy, and we say so plainly. Dreams reflect: they rehearse worries, replay the day, and show what your attention keeps returning to. The folk traditions that read dreams as omens are covered with affection and labeled as what they are.
Are you connected to the Aya app?
Dream Lexicon is editorially independent. Several of us use the AYA Method — a daily audio practice we consider the waking counterpart to dream work — and we link it where it genuinely fits. But the lexicon's readings stand on their own, and no app edits our entries.
Can I ask about my own dream?
Yes. The dream interpreter takes a dream in your own words and returns a calm reading with the symbols inside it, linked to the full entries. Nothing you write there is stored.
